Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project, Formation of Citizen Community Boards, and Technical Advise to Faisalabad District Government As part of the Government of Pakistan's Devolution of Power Programme, Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project (FAUP), assisted the Faisalabad District Government to facilitate the formation, registration and capacity building of Citizen Community Boards (CCBs) in all union councils of the District. In addition, technical assistance provided to top local government officials for the implementation of the good governance programme. Designing and implementation of a huge social mobilization and communication strategy to ensure that at least one major area level CCB is formed and registered with the District Coordinating Officer's office in each of the union councils of Faisalabad District. In fact by 30th June 2002, a total of 289 CCBs were formed and registered in a fair and non-partisan, participatory and transparent manner. Considerable number of capacity building workshops were held throughout the District. Literature was developed, printed and disseminated in Urdu, including: the National Reconstruction Bureaus (NRB) Guidelines for CCBs; Rules of Business for Union Councils, Bye-laws for Union Councils and training manual for CCBs. These have been disseminated to nearly all districts in Punjab.

Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project,. Implementation Phase Pakistan The project consists of two components. The first is the promotion of economic and social welfare for slum and Katchi Abadi dwellers and the second to improve primary infrastructure for water supply, sewerage, drainage and solid waste. An important feature of the project was to develop a sustainable capacity within the communities to manage the upgrading. Long term advisory services to Faisalabad Development Authority. The primary task of the consultants team is to promote awareness of project principles among the community and government officials and to develop organisations and support mechanisms for the community based activities.

Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project,. Devolution of Power Programme Pakistan Following the Government of Pakistan's devolution of power to the districts and unions councils programme, Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project, re-aligned its activities to support this initiative. The first phase was to create awareness amongst the 9.0 million population and provide guidance to the city government's transition team to smoothly plan for the transfer of power from being a City government to a District government Planning and implementation of a huge mobilization and communication strategy to target the great majority of the Divisional population and in particular to include at least 950,000 eligible voters residing in slums and katchi abadis using workshops, TV , radio, skits, posters, banners, local NGO's and community activists . Furthermore to provide technical assistance to the city government to plan for the transition period to District government.

NWFP Second Urban Development Project, Pakistan Detailed design and supervision of infrastructure and environmental improvement programmes for Peshawar and 4 towns of NWFP including ground water protection, solid waste management, traffic management, water supply and sewage disposal. Lead consultant with one other foreign consultant and 3 local consultants directly responsible for infrastructure design, institutional guidance, community development, upgrading and environmental components.

Solid Waste Management Strategy for Faisalabad, Pakistan The purpose of the study was to develop a strategy for improving the solid waste collection and disposal practices within Faisalabad and providing recommendations and costs for priority equipment requirements. Of key importance was to make improvements in the health and social status of those currently working in the industry. In association with Binnie & Partners (UK), GHKI was responsible for institutional and social planning aspects of the study.

Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project - Preliminary Infrastructure Studies Pakistan Project preparation for proposed financial and technical assistance to the Faisalabad Development Authority to implement an upgrading project in low income areas of the City. Outputs included a review of the water supply, demand, population needs, zoning and distribution networks, institutional capacity and tariffs. To prepare preliminary design drawings and cost estimates for a selection of appropriate infrastructure improvement options to upgrade water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, drainage, roads, electricity and street lighting facilities.
